Ooooh sparkly!

Here’s a thing about me: I own a lot of earrings. And by a lot I am talking 60+ pairs. To be more precise, I own 63 pairs of earrings. Unless I counted wrong. Anyway, they are beautiful and sparkly and I love them. And the number is ever growing, thanks to cheap fashion jewelry stores (SIX, I’m looking at you!).

63 pairs of earrings

I have lots of different earrings, big, small, silver, colorful. Some I wear all the time, some I wear hardly ever, some I used to wear all the time and now I don’t. But I would never just throw them away. Even though most are not silver and only cost me $5-10. But you know the problem about owning so many pairs of earrings? How do you organize them? Sure, they all fit into a box that is fairly small – and that’s how I store them. But you can guess how long it takes to find a matching pair when they’re all jumbled up like that, often entangled and all in a big messy pile.

A box full of sparkly things

Right, so this box? Is far from perfect. In fact, I am sure it is the nightmare of anyone with OCD. And every time I cannot find the second earring unless I take apart the entire box, it is my nightmare too. But you know, this could be so much prettier. Because there are so many great organizing solutions for storing your earrings out there, and not only are they, well, neat, but they are also creative, stylish and beautiful. And I swear, one day (soon), I will buy one of those jewelry holders for myself. Or heck, maybe I’ll even get crafty and make my own. Until then, I will just keep window-shopping on Etsy. So, tell me, which one of these is your favorite? And how do you organize your jewelry?

Let's go on a trip!

Even though I am European and have lived in Europe my whole life, I am pretty sure that many non-Europeans have seen more of the cities to see in Europe than I have. I have done my fair share of traveling (though nowhere near as much as I would like), but somehow I never managed to go to those cities that would be on a must-see list for anyone visiting Europe. I don’t really have a good excuse for it either, except I am notoriously bad at saving up for anything, or really, with money in general.

I do hope that I will have the opportunity to do one or two of the trips on my list this year, and visit the others in the coming years. After all, all it takes is a few hundred bucks (if only those were easy to obtain) and an extended weekend. Flights within Europe are so cheap nowadays, and some of the cities are distances that would even be manageable by train.

While I have been to London, Dublin (though that was nearly ten years ago, and I definitely want to revisit, what with how little I remember except that I loved it), the Tuscany, a couple of towns in France, and many cities in Spain, I have yet to visit …

Aren’t these stunning photos of beautiful places? If you gave me the option to travel to one of these cities tomorrow, all expenses paid, I wouldn’t hesitate to go. And soak up the impressions of foreign places. And take beautiful photos of my own.

I cannot wait for my next trip. I am missing traveling so much. I hope it will be soon.

If you had the opportunity to go on a trip somewhere, anywhere you want, tomorrow, which place would you pick?

A day of losts and founds

On Saturday I got up at 6.15am to go to Stuttgart with a friend of mine. I’d passed through that city many times on the train but I had never actually visited it, and what with my likely leaving this region this year, I have decided that I want to do a little traveling to and sightseeing in the state. We originally wanted to do this trip a month ago, but ended up putting it off until now because of my thesis.

Stuttgart was really nice. It’s not that big a city, and we only spent a few hours there so I didn’t see everything but I did like what I saw. While it is nowhere near as picturesque as Heidelberg or Munich, it does have a few lovely places to offer to its visitors. One of which being this gazebo that I absolutely fell in love with. I want a gazebo like that in my backyard! Okay, I’d be happy if whichever city I move to has one! The fact that I love it so much may or may not be related to the fact that Stars Hollow (that Stars Hollow, and yes, I do realize it’s a fictional town) has one and I always thought it was absolutely beautiful.

Though the one in Stuttgart is even more beautiful, if you ask me. By the way, if you are not as enamoured with the cross process option on Flickr as I am, you can see the original version of each picture by clicking on it.

We also saw the most delicious-looking chocolates at the market hall, and a guy playing the saxophone with a parrot on top of his head. No really. A real, living parrot.

It was a really fun day, even though my feet were so sore after all these hours of walking around cold and snowy Stuttgart. And did I mention it was cold? So very cold. Which was not helpful that time when we got a little lost in the woods looking for a subway or bus stop after a visit to the TV tower. We did find one after a half hour of walking through the snow, though, and we even got to ride the Stuttgart “Zacke” – Germany’s only rack railway, so it was good for something, after all. And while it was cold, we did get lucky with the weather because, at least for a few hours in the afternoon, the sun came out and the sky was bright blue.

The Stuttgart 'Zacke'

Other than that, the day involved lots of good food (that may not all have been so healthy, but we walked so much I hope it didn’t do any “damage”), spending more time in stores than planned (it was oh-so-tempting to do some “big city shopping” but I didn’t end up buying much), oh, and my finding a girl’s public transport ID in the snow, only to lose it again before we made it to the Lost & Found. Not one of my brightest moments!

All in all a great day with my friend whom I hadn’t seen since last summer. I am so happy I finally got to use my camera again. I haven’t had many opportunities to use it lately, and I have been missing it so much!

The weekend ended with a Sunday mostly spent in bed, sleeping or reading. Perfect way to spend Sunday, but the weekend went by way too quickly. How was yours?

Fold or crumple?

The other day I went to the movies with a friend who is American. In the restroom, we spotted this vending machine. The labels are in German but I think you will be able to figure out what the words mean in English. (Look at your mad German skills!)

It really leaves me wondering what message the movie theater operators are trying to send the teenagers who go to the restroom before a movie? And besides, yes this is the only vending machine. Basically, if you need a tampon, you’re screwed (well, at least that is something this vending machine might help you with).

My friend put it down to cultural differences, just like the crumpling vs. folding of toilet paper. Because apparently Americans crumple and Germans fold. I definitely know I fold but how about you? Fold or crumple?
