College days

To the living spirit

Today, like the past couple of days, has been spent almost entirely at the computer lab. Not just because I need to use a computer and my laptop is still in repair, but also to escape the heat. You see, it has been  really hot here lately and my room has become unbearable during the day. And the computer lab? Is air-conditioned. The computer lab is on the other side of campus (that I live on), and so I have been spending quite some time on campus, studying, eating, walking around and riding my bike.

Studying at the computer lab

I had hardly ever been here before I moved on campus, because it is the sciences campus and all my classes took place downtown. So even now that I live here, I usually just walk to the bus stop to catch the bus going downtown. I have gotten to know the campus a little better, though, knowing where all the important buildings are, and I don’t get lost in the concrete jungle anymore.

Bikes at the university cafeteria

Taking classes in the downtown part of the university is different from the sciences campus. Mostly because there is no downtown campus. The buildings are all over the old part of town, and we college students share the area with tourists and shoppers alike. Everything is more spread out, and there isn’t much of a community feel to the university downtown. The sciences campus is an actual campus, though, and all the buildings on campus are university-owned and used by various departments. And whenever I go places during the day, the campus is crowded with students, walking or riding their bikes to classes, to the cafeteria, etc.

Riding my bike across campus

Not only have I been taking classes downtown, I have not actually taken a class since the fall semester, and I have not taken a mandatory class in over a year. I wrote my thesis at home, and have studied for my exams at home and in the library, so I have spent very little time in the actual English & Spanish department buildings. I have not felt very student-y in a while.

Eating lunch in the cafeteria

And today, riding my bike across campus, carrying a backpack full of books, studying at the computer lab, eating at the cafeteria, I just felt so much like a college student. There were so many like me. I was by myself and I knew I was not one of them (a science major) but at the same time I felt like one of them.

A heavy backpack full of books

In just 15 days, I will be taking my very last exam, after which I will be completely done with anything college-related, and I will no longer be a college student. I will have to move out of student housing, find a job, and start living like an adult. Until then, I will be cherishing every single one of my last days as a college student.

What do or did you love about being a college student?

Why the World Cup is great

I am not too much of a soccer fan 99% of the time. I do have a favorite German team and I keep up on the scores every few weeks during the season but I don’t really watch soccer on TV. I also hardly ever go to soccer games. The last one was about three years ago and the last one before that I cannot even remember.

For for a month every four years, everything changes. I become a soccer fan, as do 99% of the population in Germany. Why, you ask? Well, duh! It’s the World Cup. The last World Cup before this one took place in Germany in 2006 and that month was epic. I did not go to any game but that year live viewing events became really big in Germany. Of course, having the World Cup happen in our own backyard made it extra special, but this year has been pretty amazing as well.

At the cafeteria after the game

I watched the first two matches that Germany played at home and the third one, which took place on my birthday, my friends and I went to watch at the university cafeteria. I had bought a Germany t-shirt but my friends got me a bunch of Germany-themed presents so I ended up with the most fun fan gear! What kind of fan gear you ask? The awesome kind. Oh, you want a picture? Alright, here you go.

Ready for the game!

Tomorrow, Germany is playing England and of course I am hoping we will win. And if it is just so we have more fun live viewing events to go to. Also because I want Germany to advance to the quarter finals, of course!

But honestly, for me the best thing about the world cup is the amazing atmosphere! Due to German history, we don’t usually get patriotic. The World Cup is an exception, and it is so great to see all the black, red, golden flags (etc.) everywhere. But see for yourself …

So tell me, are you following the World Cup?

The 28th Year

On Twitter I have hinted at this project a few times but due to my unexpected laptop failure on Wednesday, I was not able to actually start the project until today.

As of my birthday, which was on Wednesday, I am taking part in the Project 365. But instead of Flickr, I have created a Tumblog for this project and I will be taking one picture for each day of the next year. Until I get my laptop back, I may not be able to post a picture every day, but I will be taking one for every day, and then post them as soon as I get a chance (i.e. access to a computer).

The blog is named The 28th Year because I started the project on my 27th birthday, and will be posting a picture for every day of my 28th year of life, concluding with the day before my 28th birthday.

My goal is to post an interesting, beautiful, or funny shot of every day, documenting one year of my life in pictures. I hope you will be following me throughout the 365 days of The 28th Year.

Today’s picture is of the computer lab I am at right now.
