Why the World Cup is great

I am not too much of a soccer fan 99% of the time. I do have a favorite German team and I keep up on the scores every few weeks during the season but I don’t really watch soccer on TV. I also hardly ever go to soccer games. The last one was about three years ago and the last one before that I cannot even remember.

For for a month every four years, everything changes. I become a soccer fan, as do 99% of the population in Germany. Why, you ask? Well, duh! It’s the World Cup. The last World Cup before this one took place in Germany in 2006 and that month was epic. I did not go to any game but that year live viewing events became really big in Germany. Of course, having the World Cup happen in our own backyard made it extra special, but this year has been pretty amazing as well.

At the cafeteria after the game

I watched the first two matches that Germany played at home and the third one, which took place on my birthday, my friends and I went to watch at the university cafeteria. I had bought a Germany t-shirt but my friends got me a bunch of Germany-themed presents so I ended up with the most fun fan gear! What kind of fan gear you ask? The awesome kind. Oh, you want a picture? Alright, here you go.

Ready for the game!

Tomorrow, Germany is playing England and of course I am hoping we will win. And if it is just so we have more fun live viewing events to go to. Also because I want Germany to advance to the quarter finals, of course!

But honestly, for me the best thing about the world cup is the amazing atmosphere! Due to German history, we don’t usually get patriotic. The World Cup is an exception, and it is so great to see all the black, red, golden flags (etc.) everywhere. But see for yourself …

So tell me, are you following the World Cup?

I am exactly the same … I am usually not a big soccer fan (and I don’t really follow the Bundesliga ), but when the European or World Championships come around, everything changes. I get really excited about the games and become very patriotic :)

J and I have some German fan stuff that we wear for the games (and yes, you read that right… J is rooting for Germany as well :)).

I am so excited about tomorrow.

I am the same type of soccer fan as you are and I so enjoyed being in Germany and having the possibility to watch our first 3 matches in beergardens! Now I have to see, none of my friends here is really into the world cup ( except the argentinians;-)) and since Sweden didn’t even make it to the world cup there is no public viewing either! I guess we’ll watch at home!

Loving the spirit! I know a few English friends were displeased yesterday but the better team won – and it’s all about that, after all. Should make for an interesting semi!

As you would probably expect, I loved this post! :) Like you said, this apparently applies to most Germans: don’t really care about the Bundesliga all that much but when the Euro or the World Cup come around, WE GO ALL OUT. Heh. I’m the same way.

As far as fan gear goes, I’m somewhat late to the party this year. I just got one of those Hawaiian (supposedly?) necklace thingys in black, red and gold and a crazy silly “afro” wig after the Argentina game. My brother, though, actually managed to get his hands on (= pay a ridiculous amount of money for) the pretty pretty black Adidas jerseys of the national team. I really want one of those myself but of course they’re sold out completely.

Love love love soccer! No matter if it’s the World Cup, European Championship, Champions League or Bundesliga. In fact ESPN will be showing Bundesliga games online starting this August. Yeehaw! I think I am also slowly turning into a Bayern Muenchen supporter. Haha. However, I am also rooting for Schalke and Werder! :)
