A breathtaking evening

So far, summer in Germany has been pretty disappointing. It has been unusually cold and rainy, with many days not even hitting a high of 70. And after Saturday, which was absolutely gorgeous, Sunday followed with more of that disappointing weather. But sometimes rain makes for the most beautiful sunsets and last night we were doubly blessed with an amazing sunset and the most gorgeous rainbow ever. If you look closely you can even see a second rainbow.

A beautiful evening

A beautiful evening

At the same time, the sun was setting in the west and gave the entire town this beautiful, golden glow. It was still raining so the sun reflected in the wet streets. It was so beautiful.

A beautiful evening

Last night was definitely one of the times that I was happy for living out in the country because you don’t often get so see nature as beautiful as this when there are buildings upon buildings blocking your view.

A beautiful evening

This was the first time in my life that I saw a rainbow, complete from one end to the other. I was honestly giddy with excitement.

As the sun set, the sky turned this lovely shade of dusty pink. The rainbow didn’t vanish until it got dark. It was so amazing.

A beautiful evening

And as the sun set into the horizon, the clouds were looking more and more dramatic, like the sky was on fire.

A beautiful evening

It was such a magical evening, one of the most beautiful sunsets I witnessed. And one of the moments that I absolutely loved living in small town Bavaria.

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure

Every year the town I grew up in (a suburb of Munich) organizes a flea market that people can donate things to that they don’t need any more, such as books, toys, clothes, kitchen items, etc. The flea market takes place every June and has for the past 30 years. It has become a huge event that even people from other suburbs come here for, you can eat and drink there, and make awesome (and awful) finds. An auction is held for the particularly nice items.

The proceeds from the flea market are used for various things in the community, such as new books for the library, etc. I personally think because this way, the entire community can profit from the sale of things that would otherwise just collect dust in the basements of this town.

I am not usually a person to shop at flea markets, but whenever I am in town I try to go, especially for the book market because it is a great opportunity to snag up new reading material. And awesome old books (which I bought at this same flea market a few years ago) which I have no plans of reading but just like looking at. It’s a really nice way of supporting the community and even though I don’t live here anymore, I did for several years and do think it’s a pretty great place. Being that I was in town this weekend, I just couldn’t miss it. I spent a few hours there on Saturday with my best friend and made some great finds.

A set of tray & coasters

A set of matching wooden tray and coasters. I love their vintage look and think they will fit into my living room perfectly. I actually did not realize this was a set till I got home, I just thought they matched well. Score!

A vase and three pitchers

A vase and three pitchers. I am not planning to use these as pitchers (though I am planning on using the vase) but I think they will make for really nice decoration in my living room. Love their old-fashioned charm. I paid a total of €8 for the set of tray & coasters, the vase, and three pitchers.

A facsimile of 1884 calendars

Facsimiles of four 1884 calendars & an envelope by Kate Greenaway. I think these will look awesome framed. €2.

A facsimile of a 19th century children's book

Like the calendar, a facsimile of a children’s book from the Osborne Collection of Early Children’s Books. €2. They had an entire collection of these for sale and it makes me wish I had known about it earlier. The book market is held on both Friday and Saturday and one of the volunteers there told me the nicest pieces were already gone on Friday. I am very happy with the two pieces I got and hope the others also found loving homes rather than having been bought by people who are planning to sell these at a profit (because they are likely worth more than what they were sold for).

A bunch of books

Ten new books for me to read. €12.

Poor Richard's Almanack by Benjamin Franklin

One of the books is a really nice reproduction of the original edition of Poor Richard’s Almanack by Benjamin Franklin. His autobiography was one of the topics I had to cover for my final exams of my degree so this was a sentimental purchase because it reminded me of my last year of university. I really enjoy reading his words of wisdom – and humor, though.

A stepper

I also bought a stepper. I figured it might be a neat way of working out while watching TV in the evening. This stepper looks like it was barely used, just a little dusty. It’s in great condition, it even still has a working battery. I don’t have much workout equipment but this is fairly small and can easily be stowed away in a corner of my living room. It only cost me €3 so if I don’t end up using it for long, it’s not that big a loss.

I am pretty happy with my finds, I made some really great bargains. Now I just have to wait for my parents to take everything to my apartment in a few weeks as there is no way I can take everything with me on the train.

Do you like shopping at flea markets? What has been your favorite find?

My life in bullet points

“The miracles of nature do not seem miracles because they are so common. If no one had ever seen a flower, even a dandelion would be the most startling event in the world.” Anonymous
♥ I can’t believe it has been a month again since my last post!

♥ Last weekend, I gave my blog a little makeover, so do click on through to my blog if you are reading this through Google Reader.

♥ Since my last post I  took my first week off work since I started my job. I spent a few days in Heidelberg & in Munich.

♥ A couple of weeks ago, I attended the wedding of a friend of mine.

♥ On Friday, the CEO of the company I work at gave away tickets to a concert by German singer Herbert Grönemeyer in Munich. Three co-workers of mine and I got them. We’ll be driving down to Munich tomorrow after work to see him live at the Olympic Stadium. This is pretty awesome if you ask me.

♥ It’s my 28th birthday on Thursday and I have Friday and Monday off work making for an extra long weekend in Munich. I am leaving on Wednesday after work and won’t be getting back here until Tuesday morning.

♥ I went on a sort-of date last weekend and it mostly left me wondering what exactly it is I want because I sure seem to have a hard time finding it. This seems to be a bad place to be in at nearly 28. Or maybe I am just not compatible with German/Bavarian guys. I have seriously considered this.

♥ I went to my nephew’s first communion. This experience made me very glad not to be Catholic. No offense to any Catholics reading this, but it is just not for me. Between that and my friend’s wedding, I probably spent more time in a church that week than in the entire five years before that.

♥ I have gained roughly 35 pounds since Christmas. It sucks. And for some reason I need to say it, because it hasn’t quite hit home yet that something needs to change. Right now. And by right now I mean as soon as I have eaten my birthday cake. No, seriously, I do need to do something about this.

♥ I cannot believe how little I have blogged in the past few months. (I mean, this is only my 10th post in 2011!) I plan on changing that this upcoming weekend. I mean, I do have five days off work. I always plan on blogging more and then never do. I miss it but at the same time clearly prefer to do other things right now. Does anyone have a solution for this problem?

Possibly the cutest store ever

I promised in my post the other day that I would post about the cutest store that my best friend and I came across last weekend. It is located in the nearest bigger town (with a population of a whopping 28,000). The entire town is very picturesque and the buildings are all so charming. It is a small town and it is not very practical in terms of shopping but it is such a beautiful place. I really enjoy the atmosphere there, seeing all the beautiful houses, and I want to spend a lot more time there now that it’s warm, when I get the chance.

Cute, right?

We walked into the store which is filled with pretty things, picture frames, soap, pillows, jewelry, kitchen utensils, and various other knick knacks. We then walked down to the basement where we found more treasures. I took some pictures there. I was not sure whether the store owners would be okay with my taking any so I didn’t take any of the upstairs, though maybe I will ask them if I can the next time I go there. I was seriously blown away by how beautiful everything looked. Because I feel like my words won’t do it justice, I will leave you with these pictures. If I had to summarize my feelings in one word, it would be LOVE. In capital letters.

I really loved not just the things they sold but also how they were set up, like walking into the attic of an old house.

The furniture was also for sale. I would love to have this for my living room.

Aren’t these just so precious?

Spot the little milk jug on the table there? It matches the sugar bowl I bought. I keep wondering whether I should go back and buy it, even though I don’t see myself needing it. Just because it’s so pretty. And it matches the sugar bowl. And maybe my taste buds will at some point change how they feel about coffee. I think if they still have it the next time I go there, I will just decide that it’s fate and that I should have it.

I could have spent so much more time browsing that store, and I just know that I will be back. A lot.

Aside from the sugar bowl that I showed you in my previous post, I also ended up buying these bracelets by Danish designer Lisbeth Dahl. I love them so much.
